One
of the most loved seasons on the Christian calendar is Advent. The
word advent comes from the Latin word adventus which means
coming. It is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the
celebration of the Nativity of Jesus on Christmas. Advent begins
on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. This year Advent begins on
November 27.
It
has become my custom to lead a small group study during Advent. I
lead these studies for several reasons. First, I enjoy spending
time with the people of Western Reserve. Over the years, I have
found myself more and more isolated. Second, in small groups we
discover the spiritual side of one another. In the true Wesleyan
tradition, we hold one another accountable as we draw closer to
Jesus. Third, these studies remind us of the real meaning of
Advent and Christmas. We are more then consumers; we are disciples
of Jesus Christ!
This
year I want to look at Adam Hamilton’s book, The Journey.
Hamilton is the pastor of one of the fasting growing United
Methodist Churches in the world today, the Church of the
Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas. In this book we will look at the
sacred texts that hold the stories surrounding the birth of Jesus.
I am offering two sessions of this class. We will meet on Monday
mornings at 10:00 and again on Monday evenings at 7:00. Both
sessions will last approximately 90 minutes. We will begin on
November 28. My Advent sermon series will accompany this study.
Listed below is my preaching schedule.
Once
again, I want to invite you to both attend worship and be part of
these small group studies. May God bless you as we begin the holy
season.
I
hope to see you each week.
In His Service,
Russ
